A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on the island of Mindanao, killing at least two people and causing damage to buildings and infrastructure, as well as widespread power outages.

A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Manay in the Mindanao region early Tuesday morning, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake, which struck at 9:43 a.m. local time.

Authorities issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of the Philippines and neighboring Indonesia, though the threat was lifted a few hours later.

The Philippines is one of the world’s most seismically active countries, recording more than 800 earthquakes every year.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later confirmed that the threat had passed. Neighboring Indonesia also issued tsunami alerts for North Sulawesi and Papua, according to its national geophysics agency.

Authorities reported damage to several structures, including cracks along the Magsaysay Bridge in Butuan City. Evacuations were ordered in affected areas, schools suspended classes for the day, and aftershocks are expected.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said emergency teams were assessing the full extent of the damage and that search and rescue operations were underway.
