Basketball referee Vaso Tsaroucha and former referee Tasos Piloidis were placed under house arrest with electronic monitoring (ankle bracelets) yesterday, on the condition that they refrain from all basketball-related activities. The decision comes as part of the Basketgate investigation into an alleged match-fixing network operating since 2016.
Vaso Tsaroucha denies the charges against her. According to witness testimony, she is implicated in 13 matches between 2018 and 2026. She reportedly argued, among other things, that she had not officiated some of those matches, according to Kathimerini.
Head referee Ilias Koromilas has been ordered into pretrial detention. Two days earlier, pretrial detention was also ordered for Greek Basketball Federation (EOK) president Vangelis Liolios and his associate, businessman Giannis Mavraganis.
All those involved denied the charges against them during questioning.
“I was never a member of the Central Refereeing Committee (KED), nor did I have any authority or involvement in the selection, appointment or replacement of referees for matches. Such decisions fall exclusively within the jurisdiction of the competent refereeing bodies,” Koromilas reportedly told the investigating judge.
These latest detention orders follow the earlier pretrial detention of former referee Petros Papapetrou.
Those involved face charges, depending on the individual case, of offering or accepting bribes to manipulate matches.
