Card use and electronic payments are increasing in Cyprus, while the number of ATMs is declining, according to Central Bank of Cyprus data for 2022–2025.
At the end of 2025, Cyprus had 396 active ATMs, down from 416 in June 2022, a decrease of 4.8%. Over the same period, the number of active payment cards rose by 33.8%, from 1,659,011 to 2,220,202.
Data for the second half of 2025 show that cards accounted for 75% of transactions by number. However, electronic bank transfers accounted for the largest share of transaction value, at 84%. Card payments represented 6% of the total value, while cheques accounted for just 1% of transactions by number.
The figures suggest that cards are used mainly for everyday payments, while electronic transfers are used for larger amounts.
Meanwhile, in-store payments accounted for 70% of transactions by number at the end of 2025. By contrast, online purchases represented 60% of the total value of payments.
The data also show that cards and electronic money are used for payments to businesses abroad, mainly for online purchases, subscriptions and air travel.
Overall, the figures indicate that cards are used primarily for everyday payments, while electronic transfers are used for larger amounts.
