Kimberly Guilfoyle has announced her resignation as US ambassador to Greece following allegations of misconduct, which she denies as “false.”
The Wall Street Journal reported on a series of controversial actions allegedly taken by Guilfoyle before assuming her post in Athens. These included accepting improper gifts and offering to use her influence within the US government in exchange for the repayment of a $100,000 credit card debt.
“These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity. I have dedicated my professional life to fighting for justice, standing up for what is right, and defending the values that make America exceptional,” Guilfoyle wrote on X.
Of the 196 US ambassadorial positions worldwide, 93 are currently vacant.
“I will not allow false accusations to define my years of public service,” she added.
Earlier, White House spokesperson Katie Zacharia said Guilfoyle had been asked to resign. Despite the request, Guilfoyle reaffirmed her support for President Donald Trump.
Josh Huck, the deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Athens, will serve as chargé d’affaires until a new ambassador is appointed.
