Greek households are expected to pay up to 41% more for heating oil than last year, despite a combined €0.40-per-litre discount announced by the government today (October 14). Sales begin tomorrow, October 15, with prices estimated at €1.55 per litre, compared with approximately €1.10–€1.12 during the same period last year in Attica.

This year’s estimated price is based on an initial €1.95 per litre, minus a €0.20 government subsidy and an equivalent discount from refineries. However, the price is indicative and could range from €1.50 to €1.60 per litre, depending on international prices and location.

The government estimates the new support package will cost the state budget €98 million.

For households eligible for the heating allowance, the government estimates an effective cost of around €1.35 per litre. This is not the actual purchase price, as the financial relief depends on the allowance received by each household. The heating allowance will also increase by 30% for the 2026–2027 winter season, with a maximum payment of €1,560 and no changes to eligibility criteria. Applications are expected to open by November 10.

The government also announced a €0.20-per-litre reduction in diesel prices from October 15 and a €0.10-per-litre reduction in unleaded petrol prices from October 17. These discounts are temporary and will remain in effect until October 31, when their extension will be reviewed. No extension has been announced, leaving open the possibility of further price increases.

The additional fiscal cost of the package is estimated at €98 million, including €46 million for fuel subsidies and €52 million for the increased heating allowance.
