The judicial council has referred former Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Christos Triantopoulos to the Special Court for breach of duty over the backfilling of the Tempi crash site, following the recommendation of a deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court.
According to Kathimerini, the case concerns his actions at the crash site and the alteration of the area before all the victims’ bodies had been recovered.
The case involves eight people in total. The judicial council has now referred Triantopoulos and four others to trial: then Thessaly Regional Governor Kostas Agorastos, former Secretary General for Civil Protection Vasilis Papageorgiou, Agapios Charakopoulos, the Hellenic Police official in charge at the scene, and Evangelos Falaras, the Fire Service official in charge.
Four others have also been referred to trial: then Thessaly Regional Governor K. Agorastos, former Secretary General for Civil Protection V. Papageorgiou, and the officials in charge of the police and Fire Service at the scene.
In March 2025, in a letter to Parliament’s preliminary investigation committee on the Tempi crash, Triantopoulos requested that his case be referred directly to trial.
In his testimony, he said: “The excavation and transportation work took place on March 1 and 2, while I first arrived at the site on the afternoon of March 3, solely to receive an update and make a public statement.”
He also reportedly said that references in the indictment to his monitoring and coordination of the operation resulted from a “misinterpretation of the content of press releases I issued at the time.” He described the March 3, 2023 meeting of officials, where the backfilling was reportedly decided, as a “spontaneous meeting” for an “exchange of views.”
