Sofia Christodoulou Makri has been elected president of EDEK, Cyprus’s Socialist Party, with 53.5% of the vote in the party’s internal election held on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
According to EDEK’s official results, Christodoulou Makri received 1,191 votes. Koullis Mavronikolas received 788 votes, or 35.4%, while Giorgos Kouttoukis received 246 votes, or 11.1%.
A total of 2,233 party members across Cyprus took part in the election, with 2,225 valid ballots cast.
Sofia Christodoulou Makri is 27 years old. She was elected secretary-general of EDEK Youth in 2024 and its president in 2025.
“The deputy president, the leadership and the members of EDEK extend their warm congratulations to the new president of EDEK,” the party said in a statement after the results were announced.
In her first remarks after her election, Christodoulou Makri thanked EDEK members for their votes and said she understood the responsibility that came with her new role.
Christodoulou Makri, 27, was elected secretary-general of EDEK Youth in 2024 and its president in 2025, a position she held until her election as party leader. She is also an elected member of the Audit Committee of the Young European Socialists, based in Brussels, and works as a lawyer in Cyprus.
