Alexis Tsipras, president of the Greek Left Alliance (ELAS), presented the party’s economic programme in Thessaloniki on Wednesday evening.
Among other measures, he promised tax changes, including tax breaks for families with children, an increase in the minimum wage to €1,000 during 2027 and an increase in the average full-time salary to €1,800 by the end of the four-year term.
Tsipras also pledged to cut VAT on basic food and hygiene products to 6% and introduce free travel on public transport.
He also promised to move five ministries outside Attica, specifically to Thessaloniki, Larissa, Heraklion in Crete, Lesvos and Kozani.
In education, he pledged, among other measures, to hire 30,000 new teachers, provide free school meals to every primary school pupil, abolish the nationwide university entrance exams and provide a €500 monthly scholarship for 10 months a year to every student studying away from home.
On housing, he pledged to provide “50,000 new affordable housing options” and establish an Affordable Social Housing Organisation.
In healthcare, he promised, among other measures, to increase doctors’ and nurses’ salaries by an average of €500 a month. He also announced plans to establish a National Integrated Care Guarantee for 140,000 people with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
For pensioners, he pledged to end their contribution towards the cost of medicines.
