The second phase of permanent deregistrations of long-term students will be completed on December 31, 2026. It mainly concerns students in five-year degree programmes, such as engineering schools, who enrolled before 2016.
Students who had completed at least 70% of the required credits and were granted additional time but failed to complete their studies also face deregistration.
The law allows for extensions or exemptions, but only if students apply and meet certain conditions.
During the first phase of the implementation of Law 5224/2025, on December 31, 2025, 308,605 students in four-year degree programmes who had enrolled by 2017 were deregistered because they did not meet the requirements for an extension. Around 35,000 students took advantage of the “second chance” provision.
The measure applies to a total of 132 departments, mainly engineering and agricultural schools, while an estimated 80,000 students face deregistration.
Students who choose to take advantage of the “second chance” provided by the law can extend the maximum duration of their studies by two semesters, provided that:
After the September 2025 examination period, they have successfully completed at least 70% of the credits (ECTS) required under their department’s current degree programme.
They have taken exams in at least two courses, passing at least one, during any examination period in the 2024-2025 and/or 2025-2026 academic years.
Students who have up to two courses remaining after the extension period ends can request a special examination within 10 days of the results being announced. Their deregistration is suspended until the examination results are issued.
