Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated again, with the two sides exchanging fire for the first time since late July. The US said it struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. According to a US official, forces from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were preparing to use rockets to deploy naval mines in the area. Tehran said the US strike caused deaths and injuries.
In retaliation, Iran announced ballistic missile attacks on facilities used by US forces in Jordan, as well as a drone attack on al-Minhad Air Base in the UAE. A US source said the missiles fired toward Jordan were intercepted without causing significant damage, while the UAE had not immediately confirmed the Iranian attack.
The Revolutionary Guards are a powerful Iranian military force with more than 120,000 personnel that operates alongside the country’s regular military.
Meanwhile, Iranian state television reported that a tanker caught fire after hitting two mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel was not named, and no details were provided about its crew. The Revolutionary Guards warned that ships that fail to comply with Iranian rules for passage could face a similar fate.
The renewed tensions come six months after the war began. A ceasefire was agreed in April, followed by a memorandum signed in June aimed at reaching a final peace agreement. So far, however, no such agreement has been reached.
