New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called on the US government to enforce the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, so that he can be arrested if he visits New York, describing him as a “war criminal.”
The world’s leading international court for war crimes issued the arrest warrant in 2024. It targeted not only the Israeli prime minister but also other figures, including then Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of crimes against humanity in connection with the war in Gaza.
On Monday, Donald Trump said in a social media post that Netanyahu would not be arrested under any circumstances while in the United States.
“I want to be clear: Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal who remains at large,” the New York mayor said.
Mamdani had previously said that the city was examining the possibility of arresting Netanyahu if he travelled to New York for the UN General Assembly in September. However, he ultimately concluded that the city did not “independently have the legal authority to enforce the warrant.”
Nevertheless, US President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Monday, 20 July 2026, that Netanyahu “will not be arrested in any way, shape or form while he is in the United States of America.”
