The authorities have announced emergency protection measures for private-sector employees in Attica, eastern Central Greece, Thessaly and the eastern Peloponnese, due to the heatwave affecting the country.
As a result, outdoor manual work and delivery services will be suspended today from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Businesses that fail to comply with the measures face a fine of €2,000 per employee.
The measure applies to all employees, regardless of their employment status, working on technical and construction projects, at construction sites and in shipbuilding and repair zones, as well as those involved in the delivery and transport of goods by motorcycle, scooter or roller skates, whether they work for physical stores or digital platforms.
Exemptions apply to economic activities involving essential and socially critical infrastructure in the healthcare, transport and public utility sectors, including hospitals, water supply and electricity facilities, as well as air, maritime and rail transport. These services may continue to operate only if all other technical and organisational protection measures are strictly implemented.
Remote work is also mandatory for employees belonging to high-risk groups.
Meanwhile, due to an “extreme” or “very high” risk of wildfires, a red alert has been issued for Attica, Boeotia, Phthiotis, Phocis, Evia, Argolis, Corinthia, Arcadia, Laconia, Achaea, Aetolia-Acarnania, Thessaly, Kilkis, Thessaloniki and Rhodes.
As part of the wildfire prevention measures, access restrictions are also in place on Mount Hymettus in Attica, in the Seich Sou forest in Thessaloniki and in Halkidiki.
