A 46-year-old woman accused of involvement in the 2010 arson attack on the Marfin bank, which killed three people during a major anti-austerity protest, has been arrested in the United Kingdom.
An international arrest warrant had been issued for her, as she has been living in the UK in recent years. She had also contacted the Greek authorities voluntarily, saying that she was innocent and available to cooperate.
More specifically, she had called the relevant Hellenic Police department to state that she wished to appear before the Greek authorities and provide explanations regarding the case, according to Efimerida ton Syntakton.
According to police, the case was reopened after the authorities received an anonymous email naming the three arrested suspects as those responsible for the attack.
The other two people accused of involvement in the attack were arrested on Friday and requested additional time to enter their pleas on Tuesday. They were taken to the Evelpidon court complex on Friday. They face charges of multiple counts of intentional homicide over the deaths of 32-year-old Angeliki Papathanasopoulou, who was four months pregnant, 36-year-old Epameinondas Tsakalis, and 35-year-old Paraskevi Zoulia.
The Marfin arson attack occurred when individuals taking part in a large protest in central Athens against austerity measures threw Molotov cocktails and flammable liquid inside the bank branch.
In July 2013, Marfin’s CEO, the building’s security manager, and the branch manager were found guilty of negligent homicide, among other charges.
