Hamas announced the dissolution of the body that had governed Gaza for nearly 20 years, paving the way for the new administration that will assume responsibility for the territory.
Mohammed al-Farra, head of the government’s Emergency Committee, “decided to submit his official resignation from his position and announce the dissolution of the Government Emergency Committee as a sign of the seriousness of these measures, within the framework of implementing the agreed arrangements and with the aim of facilitating the administrative transition process,” according to a statement issued on Monday by the Gaza Government Media Office.
This transition was one of the conditions for the ceasefire, while the issue of Hamas’ disarmament remains unresolved.
The Peace Council is an international body, under the United States and Donald Trump, established to oversee peace processes in the region.
A Hamas official said the group wants the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza to assume its role as soon as possible. The committee is a transitional body made up of Palestinian technocrats and will be overseen by the Peace Council.
The head of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza welcomed Hamas’ announcement.
“We affirm that the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza is fully prepared to assume its national responsibilities as soon as the necessary resources and capabilities become available,” Ali Shaath wrote on social media.
