The National Council is meeting under the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, to discuss the latest developments on the Cyprus issue, following the recent visit to Cyprus by the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, María Ángela Holguín.

Christodoulides briefed the members of the National Council on the latest developments and the effort to restart the Cyprus issue process.

All leaders of the parties represented in the House of Representatives were invited to the meeting.

ALMA–Citizens for Cyprus and Direct Democracy took part in the meeting for the first time, represented by Odysseas Michaelides and Fidias Panayiotou, respectively. Former President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, who had been invited, informed that he would not attend.

Meanwhile, the President of the Republic had said, after his meeting on June 12 with María Ángela Holguín, that the current period is a critical juncture for the Cyprus issue.

He had also described the coming weeks, until the return of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Cyprus, as decisive. He also reiterated his optimism that the goal of convening an expanded meeting would be achieved, leading to the resumption of talks.
