  1. The issue of pets being present at beaches and on coastlines comes up every year, although the law is clear: they are allowed on free, non-organized beaches, with a leash and collar.
  2. At organized beaches, pets are allowed only when there is relevant and clearly visible signage, again, of course, with the use of a leash.

The issue of pets being present at beaches and on coastlines comes up every year, although the law is clear: they are allowed on free, non-organized beaches, with a leash and collar.

Organized beaches have specific operating rules, and access for pets depends on the instructions posted on site. Therefore, at organized beaches, pets are allowed only when there is relevant and clearly visible signage, again, of course, with the use of a leash.

Similar rules also apply to transporting pets by ferry and large animals are usually accommodated in special areas or cages provided by the vessel.

Pets must be microchipped, have an up-to-date health booklet, which is digitally accessible through the pet.gov.gr platform, and be registered in the National Companion Animal Registry.

These details may be requested during an inspection by the competent authorities, so owners must ensure that the animal’s documents and details are always up to date.

Similar rules also apply to transporting pets by ferry. Large animals are usually accommodated in special areas or cages provided by the vessel, while when moving around on deck they must be accompanied and wear a leash. Small pets may remain with their owners, provided they are kept in a suitable carrier and the crew’s instructions are followed.
