Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire, which is set to take effect at 4 p.m. local time on Friday, a senior US official told Reuters.
“Hezbollah and Israel agreed to a ceasefire,” the official said on condition of anonymity, adding that US and Qatari negotiators reached the agreement with Iran’s help. “We understand that, after the exchange of fire earlier today, Israel and Hezbollah are now in a ceasefire.”
US Vice President JD Vance “suddenly” canceled his trip to Switzerland, where direct talks with Iran were set to begin today.
At the same time, Israel carried out airstrikes in Lebanon following Hezbollah attacks on Israeli soldiers occupying areas in southern Lebanon.
The talks between the United States and Iran, under the agreement they signed, will last 60 days and will mainly concern Iran’s nuclear program.
Today, Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Ghalibaf, warned against any violation of the agreement, saying that “in the event of misconduct, violation of the treaty and overstepping by the other side, we have no doubt that a decisive response will be given to the enemy.”
JD Vance directly blamed Israel for the war in Lebanon, saying that it is killing civilians and that such actions “are not acceptable,” while Trump has also said that Israel must respect the agreement.
Specifically, JD Vance said yesterday: “What has frustrated the president at times is that we seem to be right on the doorstep of a major breakthrough in the agreement, and suddenly there is a major explosion in a residential center in Beirut, resulting in many people who have nothing to do with Hezbollah losing their lives.”
Meanwhile, Iran’s leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, said yesterday that Donald Trump signed the agreement “out of desperation” and, according to The Guardian, hinted that the upcoming talks would not be easy.
