  1. Greek universities slipped this year in the international Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings, which assess 1,500 universities from 106 countries, mainly because universities in other countries are improving at a faster pace, according to Kathimerini
  2. Greece already had seven universities in the ranking last year, and this year three more were added: Democritus University of Thrace, the University of the Aegean and the University of Thessaly.
  3. The National Technical University of Athens remained the top-ranked Greek institution, in 378th place, down from 356th last year. It was followed by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 402nd place, down from 390th, and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 502nd place, down from 485th.

Greek universities fell in this year’s international Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings, according to *Kathimerini*, in an environment where global competition in higher education is intensifying and institutions in other countries are improving at a faster pace.

The QS ranking evaluates 1,500 universities from 106 countries. Greece has a stronger presence in this year’s list, as three more institutions were added to the seven Greek universities already included — the National Technical University of Athens, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Crete, the University of Patras and the Athens University of Economics and Business. The new additions are Democritus University of Thrace, the University of the Aegean and the University of Thessaly. This brings the total number of Greek institutions ranked among the world’s top 1,500 universities to ten.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) holds the top spot, while Imperial College London and Stanford share second place.

However, Greece’s leading universities lost ground compared with the previous ranking. The National Technical University of Athens remains the top-ranked Greek university, in 378th place, down from 356th last year. It is followed by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in 402nd place, down from 390th, while Aristotle University of Thessaloniki ranks third among Greek institutions, falling to 502nd place from 485th.

According to the report, the main weaknesses of Greek universities lie in internationalization and reputation. More specifically, Greek institutions lag mainly in international faculty, international research networks, academic reputation and employer links, including the extent to which graduates find employment.
