Increases in the fees charged for sunbeds and umbrellas at organized beaches in Cyprus are generating complaints from the public, according to the Consumers Association, with most complaints coming from families who say that the cost of a visit to the seaside has increased substantially.
The Association’s Legal Officer, Virginia Christou, said that citizens are concerned not only about the current increases but also about the possibility that similar hikes could be introduced in other municipalities during the summer.
In Larnaca, prices remain at €2.50 for a sunbed and €2.50 for an umbrella, while in Paphos the increases have been in effect since May 1.
At the same time, complaints have been recorded regarding payment receipts on which handwritten alterations appear to have been made to the amounts charged, raising questions about the transparency of the pricing.
In addition, some beachgoers report that at certain beaches they are unable to rent a single sunbed and are instead required to pay for an umbrella as well. The Consumers Association reminds operators that organized beaches must display a price list showing all charges so that visitors know the cost in advance.

Christou called on municipalities to provide timely information to the public regarding beach charges and reminded beachgoers that they have the right to use their own equipment on the beach.
