The governments of Lebanon and Israel have agreed, with US mediation, to renew their ceasefire, on the condition of the “complete cessation of Hezbollah attacks.” Hezbollah has not yet commented on the agreement.

The three countries also stated that they “reject any attempt, by any state or non-state actor, to hold Lebanon’s future hostage.”

The agreement provides for the creation of “pilot zones” in Lebanon where the presence of Hezbollah members will be prohibited. Hezbollah will also be required to withdraw from the area between the Israeli border and the Litani River in southern Lebanon, a region that is currently occupied by Israeli ground forces.

The original ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which remained in effect despite multiple violations, was reached on April 16 through US mediation.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir described the agreement as a “serious mistake,” arguing that it would allow Hezbollah to “rebuild its strength.”

Meanwhile, shortly before the agreement was reached, IDF strikes in southern Lebanon killed at least nine people, while Hezbollah launched rocket attacks toward northern Israel.

The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, brokered by the United States on April 16, failed to halt the fighting. Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the Israeli military to intensify its strikes against Hezbollah and advance deeper into Lebanon. According to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, at least 3,516 people have been killed in Lebanon since the beginning of the war.
