Protests are continuing in Albania, with thousands of people gathering in Tirana against a tourism development in southern Albania planned by a company linked to Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Demonstrators also clashed with police forces.
The project includes the uninhabited island of Sazan, located opposite the city of Vlorë, as well as large parts of the protected Vjosa-Narta area, a wetland that hosts flamingos, seals, and sea turtle nesting sites.
Protesters carried inflatable flamingos and banners with slogans such as “The nation is not for sale” and “I don’t want an Albania like Dubai.”
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama defended the investment, stating that “there is no chance this project will be stopped as long as I am here.”
Environmental organizations oppose the project, arguing that it would affect several hundred hectares of pristine beaches. The investors, for their part, say the development will move forward responsibly.
“Our focus remains on responsible management, environmental enhancement, job creation, and generating long-term value for local communities. We respect the ongoing public and institutional processes,” said Asher Abehsera, president of Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, which is developing the project in partnership with Kushner’s company.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama defended the project. “It is very important that we remain welcoming, remain fair, and under no circumstances become known as a country where investors are treated with hostility,” he told Reuters.
