A survey by the Institute of Retail Consumer Goods Research (IELKA) says that only one in two respondents plans to go on vacation this summer, while 45% intend to reduce their spending.
The survey, conducted in May 2026, focuses on a range of issues related to consumer and purchasing behavior during summer holidays.
Mainland Greece near coastal areas is the top choice for the majority of respondents, followed by the islands at 38%.

The majority choose holiday homes, either their own (35%) or someone else’s (18%), while 35% prefer staying in rented rooms, 14% in hotels, 8% at campsites, and 9% choose to travel abroad.
Among those planning vacations, most respondents (42%) expect to be away for 4 to 7 days, while 29% plan trips lasting 8 to 14 days. The average vacation duration for those who will eventually travel is 11.4 days, almost identical to last year’s figure of 11.3 days.
According to the survey, Greeks are increasingly leaning toward more affordable vacation options in order to save money, either for a possible trip abroad or to extend the duration of their holidays.
