The government unveiled a wide-ranging plan to upgrade Athens’ public transport system during an event hosted by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in Sepolia, attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis. The plan includes, among other measures, the renewal of the city’s bus fleet, upgrades to the Metro and ISAP urban rail network, and the digital modernisation of the transport system.

According to the ministry, 1,076 new buses have already entered service, while the target is for the fleet to reach 1,700 vehicles within the next two years. The new vehicles use low-emission technology, with a significant share consisting of electric buses, as part of the government’s “green” urban mobility strategy. At the same time, interventions are planned on 15 major high-traffic bus routes, aiming to reduce actual waiting times and improve service reliability.

Five new specially adapted vehicles for the transport of people with disabilities were also presented.

In the rail sector, plans are moving forward for the procurement of 19 new trainsets for Metro Lines 2 and 3, alongside a full refurbishment programme for 14 trainsets operating on ISAP Line 1. According to STASY, the upgrades are expected to reduce waiting times to five minutes on Line 1 and 3.5 minutes on Line 3 by 2027.

The plan also includes the use of real-time data and artificial intelligence applications for network management, with the aim of improving operational efficiency and enabling faster responses to disruptions. Five new specially adapted vehicles for the transport of people with disabilities were also presented.
