In the last hours, there is a smell of gas in areas of Attica, mainly in the southern suburbs, such as Glyfada, Piraeus, Keratsini, Palaio Faliro and Drapetsona.
There is also a smell in more central areas, such as Neos Kosmos, Agios Dimitrios, Kallithea, while according to newer information, it is also detected in Galatsi, Nea Irakleio and in the area of Panepistimiou Street.
According to the Fire Brigade, from approximately 12:00 reports from residents were recorded regarding the characteristic smell in the specific areas.
The Ministry of Health stresses that there are no reports of hospitalisations due to respiratory issues, while the Ministry of Climate Crisis says that there are no “indications of increased pollutants”.
Thus, forces of the Fire Brigade, the Coast Guard and crews of DESFA were mobilised in order for the cause and origin of the smell to be identified. In fact, evacuations of schools and businesses followed in areas where the smell was more intense.
Extensive checks were carried out on the natural gas network of Attica, with emphasis on the southern suburbs by crews of the network operator Enaon EDA, without an indication resulting for a gas leak into the atmosphere. A leak has still not been identified at any point of the Natural Gas Network, as also at the refinery facilities.
In its announcement, the Municipality of Nea Smyrni stated: “A strong unpleasant smell has been observed in the last hour in the Southern Suburbs and specifically in the Municipalities of Nea Smyrni, Palaio Faliro, Agios Dimitrios, Kallithea, Glyfada, Alimos. According to the assurances of the competent authorities, the smell does not originate from a natural gas leak.”
