The Council of Ministers approved a compensation package amounting to €35.6 million for livestock farmers affected by the foot-and-mouth disease cases that appeared in animals in February 2026.
The decision provides that all compensations will be given exclusively through direct monetary payments and not through the granting of livestock capital, as was initially being examined. The aim is to avoid legal and administrative complications and to ensure European co-financing.
A total of 112 livestock farmers are expected to be compensated. For the coverage of all affected persons, €20.4 million are provided, while an additional €8.6 million will be given for support of income loss for a period of at least 12 months.
The new regulations apply retroactively from 20 February 2026 until 31 July 2026.
The state will also prepare a plan for the reconstitution of livestock capital with animals of high genetic value, which will be formed with criteria of the Scientific Committee for the reconstruction of livestock farming. At the same time, coverage of the feeding cost of the new animals will be provided until there is production and income for the livestock farmers.
The compensations for sheep and goats range from €47 to €420 per animal, for cows from €150 to €2,500 and for pigs from €35 to €5,000, depending on age, breed and productive value.
The new regulations apply retroactively from 20 February 2026 until 31 July 2026.
