The country’s 125 public hospitals received nearly 12 million visits to emergency departments and outpatient clinics in 2025, a performance that marks an 11-year record and highlights the intense pressure under which the National Health System operates. According to BI-Health data cited by To Vima, total activity reached 11,962,688 cases.

Of these, 6.45 million visits concerned regular outpatient clinics, 4.96 million involved Emergency Departments (EDs), and around 544,000 were recorded at all-day clinics.

Hospital admissions exceeded 2.5 million (2,538,914), while total inpatient days amounted to 8.3 million. Available active beds stood at 33,677, around 150 fewer than in 2024, a figure indicating increased pressure on infrastructure.

Activity in Primary Healthcare facilities remained stable at 13.4 million cases, 4.18 million of which were solely for prescription services.

The 1st Health Region, which includes Athens’ largest hospitals, recorded the highest total number of admissions, with 705,488 cases across 24 hospitals.

However, it is particularly noteworthy that the three hospitals with the highest number of admissions nationwide are not located in the 1st Health Region, but in the provinces: the University Hospital of Heraklion (88,872), the University Hospital of Larissa (87,487), and Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki (84,795). The hospital that received the highest number of emergency cases was the General State Hospital of Nikaia, with 102,761 incidents.
