The worst humanitarian crisis

On 15.04, the civil war in Sudan entered its 4th year, with a toll so far of 150,000 dead and 12+ million displaced.

About 28.9 million people (61.7% of Sudan’s population) are in a state of acute food insecurity and 33.7 million need humanitarian aid.

It is, therefore, the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, while the end of the war does not appear to be near.

Sudanese Army vs Rapid Security Forces (RSF)

(fyiteam)

The two sides fighting are the Sudanese army, under General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary organization RSF, under General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

The two men had joined forces in 2019 to overthrow the long-time authoritarian leader Omar al-Bashir and Burhan became head of state.

They did, however, carry out a coup and eventually clashed regarding their plans for the transitional period and for how the army would absorb the RSF.

What is the situation on the ground now?

(fyiteam)

The RSF last year consolidated its control in Darfur, while the army maintains control over the eastern half of the country.

Today, the battles are concentrated in the Kordofan region, which lies between the two zones, as well as on a new front opened by the RSF along Sudan’s border with Ethiopia, in the southeast.

At the same time, drones have replaced ground operations and already in 2026 about 700 civilians have been killed.

The UN speaks, but who listens to it?

(fyiteam)

Despite the enormous needs, the UN appeal for aid to Sudan in 2026 has been covered only by 17%.

Sudanese mutual-aid groups are trying to cover the gap, however at least 40% of the local community kitchens operated by these groups were forced to close due to lack of support.

Amid everything, transport costs have increased by 30% because of the war in Iran.

The war crimes

(fyiteam)

Both sides are accused of war crimes, such as mass killings, sexual violence, and mass rapes.

Also, hospitals, ambulances, and healthcare workers in Sudan have been attacked, with 2,000+ dead.

Research also reports that the two sides are using hunger as a weapon, something both deny: the government (which supports the army) denies the existence of famine and the RSF denies that it bears responsibility for the areas it controls.

The missing people

(fyiteam)

Researchers are trying to trace tens of thousands of civilians who have been reported missing or have disappeared since the start of the war, with the recorded cases by the Red Cross being 11,000+, although the real number is considered much higher.

It is characteristic of the situation that the Red Cross helped a total of 62,000+ families locate relatives who had been lost.

The foreign powers

(fyiteam)

Although the war has drawn the attention of world leaders, among them the American president, D. Trump, Sudan does not appear to be high on his agenda.

In reality, one reason foreign powers are not actively mediating to end the war is the interests they maintain in the region.

Indeed, some have become actively involved, directly or indirectly, in the continuation of the war and in supporting one side or the other, according to the evidence.

Who has been involved

The UAE is said to be the main supporter of the RSF, despite the organization’s denials, while there are indications that it is also cooperating with Ethiopia.

On the other hand, Saudi Arabia and Egypt appear to be on Burhan’s side. Iran is also said to have provided military equipment to the army.

Russia and Ukraine have also been involved in the war: the first through Wagner Group mercenaries on the side of the RSF, the second with the Sudanese army.

In the end, will the war ever end?

As long as neither side can impose a decisive victory, the fierce battles inside Sudan will continue and the war will be prolonged without prospect of ending.

With the fronts remaining active, foreign powers supporting opposing camps, and mediation initiatives failing to deliver, the war in Sudan appears to be entering a new phase, without any prospect of peace.
