A middle school student, 14 years old, entered yesterday his school in Turkey in the province of Kahramanmaras with 5 weapons and opened fire, killing at least 9 people, among them 8 students, and injuring 13, 6 of them in critical condition. The perpetrator is also dead, while his parents were also arrested.

The perpetrator used weapons that the authorities believe belonged to his father, a former police officer, stated the governor of Kahramanmaras, where the attack took place.

The authorities stated that the perpetrator committed suicide, although it was not clear whether he shot himself intentionally or by accident.

So far there are no clear indications that the two incidents are connected and the causes behind the attacks.

It is the second school shooting incident within 2 days, as one day earlier a former student attacked a high school, also in Southeastern Turkey, injured 16 people and committed suicide.

The unions of teachers have stated that violence in Turkish schools is increasing and have called on the government to strengthen the measures and to provide more psychological support to children with problems.

Experts attribute the feeling of insecurity to factors such as poverty, high rates of gun ownership and government policies that, as they said, underestimate teachers and education.

Last month, a former student stabbed a teacher inside a classroom in a vocational high school in Istanbul. The teacher later died at the hospital.
