Due to the ongoing war in Iran, ferry companies are preparing for an even greater increase in fuel prices, which have already increased by up to 150% this year, while they do not rule out even a possible shortage of them, according to “Kathimerini”.
More specifically, from €550 per metric ton at the end of 2025 it is now sold above €1,400 per metric ton and further increases are expected in the next period.
This, indeed, at a time when the seasonally high season of ferry transport will start in the next period.
The Ministry of Shipping subsidized the companies with €56 million so that they keep prices contained and discounts continue for special categories.
In order for the increase not to “pass” to the tickets and demand to be reduced by a lot, they are examining 2 scenarios.
The first is the -in advance- procurement of fuels for the next 3-5 months so that the movement of the ships is ensured and the second is the merging of routes.
As the report states, experts explain that “there is an increased possibility that all routes will become de facto non-viable”, as if ticket prices increase excessively, demand for sea transport will be destroyed. However, the risk is visible that the majority of routes will be loss-making.
However, the traffic at Easter, that is the number of passengers, vehicles and trucks, is at the same level as last year.
