  1. Meat prices in Cyprus remain at last year’s Holy Week levels, despite concerns about potential increases following livestock culling due to foot-and-mouth disease.
  2. In the market, available quantities appear to meet demand, thanks to increased supply from livestock farmers.
  3. The main issue concerns the transportation of animals for slaughter, as current restrictive measures do not allow farmers to move animals on the same day between units or from monitored to non-monitored areas.

Meat prices in Cyprus remain at last year’s Holy Week levels, while the domestic market shows sufficient supply, according to statements by the president of the Pancyprian Butchers Association, Kostas Leivadiotis, to CNA.

As he explained, there were initially estimates of price increases due to foot-and-mouth disease and the culling of animals. However, this trend was reversed thanks to an improvement in the situation, which led more livestock farmers to bring their animals to market, boosting supply. Despite losses in livestock due to disease control measures, the available quantities of meat remain sufficient to meet demand.

Approximately 6,000–7,000 animals are slaughtered daily ahead of Easter.

The main problem, according to him, concerns the transportation of animals for slaughter. The restrictive measures in place do not allow farmers to move animals on the same day between different units or from monitored to non-monitored areas, resulting in delays in gathering the required quantities.

As he noted, farmers now need more time to collect the necessary number of animals, since they are not concentrated in a single location. Finally, he mentioned that three days remain until Easter for the continuation of slaughtering, with the daily number ranging between approximately 6,000 and 7,000 animals.
