The world’s first Museum of Youth Culture will open on May 15 in Camden, London, showcasing 100,000 objects that tell the story of British subcultures such as mods, rockers, ravers, and emo.
Scattered around the team’s temporary workspace are giant photographs of leading grime artists, slides from Gavin Watson’s work documenting the everyday lives of skinheads, and a Chopper motorbike, which, as museum director Jon Swinstead wryly notes, is a piece from his own collection that “costs a few quid.”
“We also have an original Sony Walkman,” he adds. “The museum will have two entrances—one labeled ‘guys’ and the other ‘dolls’.”
Within the next four years, similar museums are planned to open in Glasgow and Birmingham.
Curators are calling on the public to donate items such as school graduation T-shirts, band merchandise, or marker-decorated bags, for a space specifically designed to pay tribute to the vast number of subcultures that emerged in the UK during the second half of the 20th century.
Swinstead says the museum fills an existing gap in the UK, which, despite having the award-winning Young V&A aimed at children, lacks a space dedicated to adolescence and the remarkable diversity of subcultures that coexisted across the country.
