The far-right party RN of Le Pen failed to win key cities it targeted in the second round of the French municipal elections, such as Marseille and Toulon.

The new Mayor of Paris will be the Socialist Emmanuel Grégoire, prevailing over the right-wing Rachida Dati, while in Marseille Benoît Payan with the left coalition prevailed over the far-right Franck Allisio.

Grégoire made a symbolic cycling victory ride with future municipal councillors in Paris on Sunday evening, to show that the French capital will continue its pro-cycling and environmental policies. “There is a lot to be done and we will start tomorrow morning”. “Paris will be the heart of the resistance against this alliance of the Right, which seeks to remove what we have most precious and fragile: the simple joy of living together,” he added.

In the first round 27–28 million French men/women voted (about 56–58.5%) and in the second 23–24 million (about 48.1%).

Payan stated that Marseille sent “a message of peace and unity”, adding that it is a victory “of the humanists who refuse the voices that promote division”.

In Nice the ally of RN, Éric Ciotti, prevailed, while in Lyon the “Green” Grégory Doucet was re-elected against the Right-wing Jean-Michel Aulas.

However, the leader of RN, Jordan Bardella, stated that the increase of local councillors was “historic”. “Never before have RN and its allies had so many elected representatives across France,” he stated.
