The Commission sent an official letter to Greece and warns that it must update its national program for the control of atmospheric pollution, as defined by the European Directive (NEC).

Specifically, the executive body of the EU sent today a letter of formal notice, giving the country two months to respond and correct the shortcomings. The NEC directive requires EU member states to submit reports regarding their national air pollution control programs (NAPCP).

These include policies and measures (PaMs) that member states selected as relevant for fulfilling their commitments for the reduction of emissions set for the periods 2020–2029 and from 2030 onwards.

In a Commission survey for 2023, Greece ranks 6th among member states in air pollution.

Thus, EU member states are obliged to take actions and submit a relevant report for the reduction of emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases, so that air quality improves.

If the relevant report is not submitted, the Commission may refer the country to the European Court.

At the same time, the Commission again calls on Greece to submit the National Building Renovation Plans (NBRP), as provided by the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (Directive (EU) 2024/1275). These plans are critical, according to the Commission, so that buildings become more energy efficient and energy bills are reduced.
