A 19-year-old professional soldier (EPOP), who was serving in a National Guard Battalion in Rhodes, was killed today after a grenade explosion, while a 39-year-old colleague of his was mutilated and is being treated at the hospital of Rhodes.
At this time, as the local newspaper “Rodiaki” reports, the doctors at the hospital of Rhodes are fighting to keep the 39-year-old alive, who according to the first reports from his colleagues has lost part of his right hand and has shrapnel wounds all over his body, as well as on his head. He is conscious and communicating with his surroundings and is expected to undergo surgery in order for his condition to be stabilized.

They are two ordnance technicians who attempted to transport weapons and grenades and during the inspection of the ammunition one of the two pulled the pin of the defensive grenade and it exploded.
The Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, wrote in a post:
“I express my deepest sorrow for the loss of life of the EPOP Soldier, during a scheduled training live-fire activity in Rhodes. Our thoughts are with his family and with his colleagues, to whom I extend my most sincere condolences. Wishes for a speedy recovery to the EPOP Sergeant, who was injured in the same training activity.”
