The Thessaloniki Metro reopened today, three days earlier than previously announced, following the completion of the first testing cycle for the operation of Line 2 (towards Kalamaria). The Metro, which is used daily by around 90,000 people, had suspended operations on November 10 in order to “synchronize” the signaling systems of the two lines, while test runs were simultaneously carried out on both lines.

Metro operations will continue as before the suspension, with limited hours (06:30–23:00 and 08:00–23:00 on weekends), but during the holiday period (December 20 – January 4) full hours will be applied to serve passengers (05:30–00:30 and 05:30–02:00 on weekends).

The two lines will share 11 stations up to “25th March” and then branch off either towards Nea Elvetia (Line 1) or Mikra (Line 2).

When operational, the second line will essentially be an “extension” of the first: they will share the first 11 stations, from “New Railway Station” to “25th Martiou,” and from there they will branch either towards Nea Elvetia (Line 1) or Mikra (the new Line 2, which includes the five stations of the extension towards Kalamaria).

The second and final test required before the line opens is being considered for the end of April, during which night tests will be conducted to reduce the full Metro suspension from one month to approximately 15–17 days, according to voria.gr.
