Thousands of people took part on Saturday in the march marking 17 years since the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos.
As the head of the march reached the intersection of Panepistimiou and Emmanouil Benaki streets, heading toward the monument of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, as happens every year, the police proceeded to use tear gas and stun grenades extensively and without provocation.
Contrary to claims made in a press release by the Hellenic Police about a “fierce attack against riot police units” by 400 people, it was the MAT forces who used excessive violence without cause, resulting in dozens of injuries, while 19 people were arrested, with their trial postponed to December 15.
Fifteen-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos was shot dead by the special guard E. Korkoneas of the Hellenic Police on December 6, 2008, in Exarchia.
According to the Hellenic Police, “as part of targeted checks conducted before and during the gatherings, a total of 54 people were brought in, of whom four were arrested for violations of weapons and drug laws.”

On Sunday afternoon, a gathering took place at the monument in response to police violence, while the authorities made ten precautionary detentions around the Kamara area in Thessaloniki.
