“Right to remain silent” invoked by Giorgos Xylouris, (Frapes), stating that he does not wish to answer any questions from the Parliamentary Inquiry Committee investigating the OPEKEPE scandal.
As he said: “For six months I have been publicly humiliated, me and especially my family, even more than the worst criminal. At this time I do not even have the basic right that every defendant has, to know why they are being accused and to be able to respond. It will be proven in the future that I have not received a single euro illegally, and everything has been checked through on-site and administrative audits, yet for six months I have suffered continuous humiliation and a stigma that will never leave me.”
When asked whether charges have been brought against him and at what stage of the process he is, he said: “I am not a lawyer to explain this to you. I submitted my memorandum. I will not enter a process to self-incriminate on matters I have no knowledge of.”
G. Xylouris is under investigation for possible money laundering from illegal subsidies, €2.5 million in bank deposits, and luxury cars he is alleged to own.
He claimed that in the recorded conversations by the Greek National Intelligence Service (EYP), where government officials are allegedly mentioned, his phone was used by another person and his voice is not heard. However, as noted by members of the Committee, the recordings were made by competent authorities and constitute “indisputable evidence.”
He also stated that he met with Tycheropoulou outside the organization a total of three times and admitted that he has taken legal action against her. Finally, he did not clarify whether he is ultimately a member of New Democracy or not.
