The magazine Traveller published the 18 biggest travel trends for 2026. Among them are trips by luxury trains (+41% in bookings for 2026) and trips based on how interesting the products in local supermarkets are, with 35% of tourists stating that they visit them when traveling and 48% stating that they cook during their trips.
New TV adaptations of classic works (e.g., Pride and Prejudice) coming out this year are also expected to influence travelers’ preferences, while cruises are expected to play a central role, either as an alternative to the experience of a luxury hotel or combined with other activities such as spirituality and relaxation, as well as the observation of astronomical phenomena, with cruises designed specifically around astronomical events.
By 2034 tourism is expected to contribute $16 trillion to global GDP (11% of the world economy).
Also, some trends are linked to Gen Z habits, whose members seek destinations with hotels/bars offering a variety of non-alcoholic drinks as well as “grandma/grandpa getaways”, meaning “boring” but relaxing vacations around a hobby (e.g., knitting, pottery).
Also, 2026 is expected to be a year when museums open or reopen with a completely new way of operating, changing what “museum” means and how people interact with exhibits, with a characteristic example being V&A East Storehouse in London where visitors can request to see, photograph, and sometimes touch objects from the collection.
