A fire broke out at the “Violanta” biscuit factory in Trikala on the Old National Road today at around 4 a.m., with 5 female workers dead, as reported by local media, and 8 injured.

It was preceded by a strong explosion at the time when inside the factory, which operates 24 hours with shifts, there were 13 employees, and for hours the fire burned uncontrollably.

The explosion was so strong that from the shockwave the building, which was one unit, was split in two, after a wall collapsed and then the roof fell, as reported by ERT.

A total of 201+ people were killed during working hours in 2025 and another 332 were seriously injured, according to OSETE.

The president of the Trikala Labor Center stated to “News247” that there were safety issues in the factory, but their access to it was difficult. A 24-hour strike has been announced in the prefecture for tomorrow.

The explosion was caused by a reason unknown until now, according to the company announcement.

“Today a serious incident occurred at the premises of our factory, during the night shift, from a reason unknown until now. (…) The Fire Service and the competent authorities are on site and operating. At this moment, the only thing that concerns us is our people. We stand by them and their families, and we do everything possible to support them. At the same time, we fully cooperate with the competent authorities and provide all available assistance,” the announcement states among other things.
