A trans person, who self-identifies as a woman and has legally recognized gender identity, 23 years old from Brazil, was placed in a separate area outside the general population in the Central Prisons, although she had requested to be transferred to the women’s wing.

According to the Central Prisons, the decision for temporary detention in a separate area was made for security reasons, aiming to prevent targeting or violence against her. As noted, the measure is temporary and will be reviewed.

Her lawyer stated that serving the sentence carries increased psychological strain, as she does not speak Greek or English.

The woman has been sentenced to six years for transporting a total of 890 grams of cocaine. She was arrested in October 2025 at Larnaca airport after arriving on a flight from Qatar, and during the inspection 540 grams of cocaine were found in her underwear, while she later stated that she had swallowed additional packages of drugs.

Her lawyer stated that serving the sentence carries increased psychological strain, as the 23-year-old does not speak Greek or English.

The Central Prisons, it is noted, provided “special instructions for increased supervision, prevention of harassment, and ensuring that the accused will have access to basic prison services and activities, and to psychosocial support, to the extent possible within existing security and infrastructure limitations.”
