The Thessaloniki metro extension toward Kalamaria, including five new stations (Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, Mikra) and one additional line, will be completed by the end of February.

The new stations are in their final phase of construction, with architectural finishes and electromechanical works underway, according to News 247. Trial runs are also being conducted between the 25th Martiou and Mikra stations.

The Thessaloniki metro (13 stations) currently serves around 100,000 passengers daily. The new stations are: Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, and Mikra.

The two lines will share 11 stations before diverging — one heading toward Nea Elvetia (Line 1) and the other toward Mikra (Line 2). To complete the project, metro operations will be suspended from November 10 to December 10. Currently, service runs on a reduced schedule from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., to allow testing of 15 additional trains that will join the existing 18.

With a total of 33 trains in operation, Thessaloniki’s advanced metro system will be able to run services every 90 seconds during peak hours — a frequency even Athens’ metro has yet to achieve.

When the metro resumes service on December 11, it will initially operate on a reduced schedule. Normal hours — from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., and until 2:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays — will return on December 20 and remain in effect throughout the holiday season.
