Former OPEKEPE president Nikos Salatas testified before the Parliamentary Inquiry Committee -which began yesterday in Parliament- into the OPEKEPE scandal, claiming he was removed from his post following the intervention of Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Giorgos Mylonakis, and not by Agriculture Minister Konstantinos Tsiaras.
Salatas emphasized that it was Tsiaras who had originally selected him for the OPEKEPE presidency.
He stated that he was “forced out” on May 23, 2025, after a brief phone call with Mylonakis, during which the deputy minister told him that “for political reasons we must avoid confrontation with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office”. Salatas added that during that call Mylonakis never explicitly told him he would be dismissed.
The parliamentary inquiry into the OPEKEPE scandal began yesterday with the testimonies of N. Salatas and I. Kavvadas, the current interim president of OPEKEPE.
The opposition is demanding that Giorgos Mylonakis be summoned to testify before the committee, arguing that he appeared to know about the prosecutors’ investigation and the case file of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, despite his attempts to downplay related media reports.
New Democracy, meanwhile, insists that Salatas was removed in order to allow “the Prosecutor’s Office to do its job,” adding that this development “proves the government’s position that not only has nothing been covered up, but on the contrary, everything has been brought to light”.
