European airports recorded a traffic record for 2025 during the first weekend of August, with nearly 70,000 flights in total. Specifically, on Saturday, August 9th, there were 33,987 flights, while on Sunday, August 10th, the number reached 35,009.
This heavy traffic was accompanied by delays averaging about 3 minutes per flight, with 52,184 flights affected between August 4th and 10th.
This means that on a daily basis, approximately 7,455 flights were impacted by such delays, corresponding to 21% of the total flights across the European network.
France accounted for the largest share of delays (26%) due to capacity and staffing issues, while Spain ranked third.
Due to the large number of flights to and from major Greek cities and islands, Greece was responsible for 16% of total delays, the second highest share.
The main causes were staffing shortages in air traffic control and poor weather conditions during that week.
Most of Greece’s delays were concentrated at Athens Airport, significantly affecting Aegean Airlines, which uses Eleftherios Venizelos as its main hub. It is estimated that about 38% of the airline’s arrival delays were due to Athens Airport.
