Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner have purchased an Albanian island for $1.4 billion and plan to transform it into a luxury resort—once unexploded munitions, such as grenades and landmines, are removed. These date back to Albania’s communist regime (1946–1991), which transported them to the island.
The 1,400-acre island of Sazan, located off the coast of Vlorë, is considered one of the last unexplored islands in the Mediterranean. According to The Guardian, it is now on track to become the centerpiece of a super-luxury destination in the region. The island’s natural beauty is untouched, and the view from its highest point, especially during sunset, is said to be breathtaking.
Under Enver Hoxha’s rule, the island served as a military base. Until the 1970s, around 150 military families lived there in complete isolation from the mainland.
Albania is quickly emerging as a rising tourist destination, having welcomed nearly 12 million foreign visitors in 2024—a 15% increase from 2023.
Today, Sazan is home to roughly 3,600 bunkers and numerous warning signs about the presence of landmines. It remains under the control of the Albanian armed forces and is permanently guarded by three sailors who travel back and forth via the island’s only port. This is where the main marina for visiting yachts is expected to be built.
Albania isn’t Kushner’s only target: he’s also eyeing Serbia, where he reportedly plans to convert the former Ministry of Defense building in Belgrade into a luxury hotel.
