The government has clearly expressed support for a ceasefire and the continuation of aid to Gaza, said Kyriakos Mitsotakis in an interview with SKAI 100.3, stressing that he has no difficulty stating that what is happening in Gaza is “unjustifiable and unacceptable.”

He claimed, “We are not silent at all,” highlighting that due to the strategic alliance between Greece and Israel, “we have an obligation to our allies to speak hard truths.”

He also referred to today’s UN Security Council meeting (where Greece is presiding), noting that the Greek Foreign Minister will make a clear statement on the protection of civilians.

In the interview, he responded to criticism from the opposition and society that the government is avoiding condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Greece did not sign a statement from 24 countries offering aid to Gaza, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stating that the country expresses itself through official channels and “not through initiatives.”

At yesterday’s protest against the genocide in Gaza, SYRIZA leader S. Famellos said, “Mr. Mitsotakis’ silence is complicity. He will not have, in the name of the Greek people, any consent to silence.” Meanwhile, A. Charitsis stated, “Mr. Mitsotakis, shame on you!”

On Monday, Greece did not sign a joint statement from 24 countries (including Canada, France, Germany, etc.) urging Israel to allow aid into Gaza. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that Greece expresses itself through official channels and “not through donor initiatives.” Greece also voted against (along with nine other EU countries) a proposal to reconsider the Association Agreement with Israel due to the ongoing situation in Gaza.
