  1. Attica has enough water for another 2.5 years, as the reduction in reservoir levels is rapid due to the drought, stated the CEO of EYDAP.
  2. Meanwhile, the surface area of the artificial Mornos Lake (which supplies water to Attica) has decreased by 18% from 2023 to 2024 and by 15% from 2024 to 2025.
  3. The volume of water in the lake has also dropped significantly, from 476 million cubic meters in April 2024 to 331 million in April 2025.

The fact that Attica has enough water for another 2.5 years, as the reduction in reservoir levels is rapid due to widespread drought, was highlighted by the CEO of the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP), H. Sakhinis, at an event on the “future of water.” He also discussed the supplementary sources that EYDAP has activated to reinforce Attica’s water supply network, such as drilling in Parnitha and Attic-Boeotia and pumping from the Ylika reserves.

Meanwhile, the surface area of the artificial Mornos Lake, which supplies water to Attica, has decreased by 18% from 2023 to 2024, and by 15% from 2024 to 2025. There has also been a significant drop in the lake’s water volume, which went from 476 million cubic meters in April 2024 to 331 million cubic meters in April 2025.

EYDAP supplies water primarily from Marathon, Ylika, Mornos, and Evinos, with only the Ylika reservoir being natural.

In April 2023, the surface area of the lake covered by water was 17 square kilometers. One year later, it had decreased to 13.9 square kilometers, and by mid-April of this year, the surface had dropped to 11.8 square kilometers.

A key reason for the reduction in reserves is that the past two years have seen “poor” snow cover on the mountains that supply water to Mornos, according to scientists.

During the 2023-2024 period, the winter was very warm, leading to very low snowfall/snow cover rates, below 20%. This year has been better than last year in terms of snow cover extent, but it remains below average, they report.
