Six people aboard a tourist helicopter in New York were killed when it lost control for an unknown reason and crashed into the Hudson River. Video footage shows the helicopter descending rapidly, nose-first, into the water. [1], [2], [3]

The passengers included the CEO of Siemens’ railway infrastructure division in Spain, his wife, also an executive at the company, and the pilot, all of whom died in the crash.

The last similar incident in New York occurred in 2018, when a tourist helicopter crashed into the East River, killing 5 people.

The helicopter was a Bell 206, operated by New York Helicopter, which offers sightseeing tours for several hundred dollars per flight. Before the crash, it appears to have taken off from Manhattan, circled near the Statue of Liberty, flown north toward the George Washington Bridge, and was returning south just outside the New Jersey shoreline. The flight lasted less than 18 minutes, according to the Guardian.

The crash occurred near the western side of Manhattan, an area known for its modern shops and restaurants, and also close to the main campus of New York University.
