The president of Olympiakos, V. Marinakis, and the mayor of Piraeus and vice president of the club, G. Moralis, are among more than 140 individuals referred to trial for the misdemeanors of inciting sports violence and participating in a criminal organization, in connection with the Lygeridis case.
Also referred to trial are the CEO of Olympiakos, Dimitris Agrafiotis, the vice president, Kostas Karapapas, and the second vice president, Michalis Kountouris.
These five Olympiakos officials are included in the case file, which states that they “provided all types of assets and financial means, knowing that by doing so, they facilitated or assisted in the commission of criminal activities by a criminal organization aimed at committing further felonies and misdemeanors.”
In a statement, V. Marinakis accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of targeting both him and Olympiakos, as well as press freedom and democracy.
The court decision specifically references the statement issued by Olympiakos FC following incidents at the Volos stadium between the team’s supporters and the police, stating that it “provoked and incited others to commit felonies and misdemeanors, thereby putting public order at risk.”
The statement referred to in the court decision included phrases such as, “Will we wait for an even greater reaction from the Olympiakos fans who are being provoked daily?” and “…and unfortunately, with the chaos that has occurred in Greek football, we may not have seen anything yet. This is something none of us want, and we are constantly trying to calm the anger of the fans!”
