There is a chair that, since the day it was created, hasn’t stayed silent and, with slow but steady plastic steps, has managed to conquer the world.

You’ll see it in winter and summer, at festivals, weddings, and baptisms, inside homes, outside homes, on rooftops, beside antennas or laundry lines, and even holding the occasional parking spot on the street.

Once upon a time, a 5,000-drachma note could buy you a dozen.

Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see it in museums, exhibitions, and theater stages.

The white plastic chair is here to stay. So, let’s learn its story.

From merely functional to iconic

A few days ago, Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny released the album “Debí Tirar Más Fotos,” aka “I Should Have Taken More Photos,” with a cover featuring two white monobloc plastic chairs.

They are called “monobloc” because they are made from a single piece of material.

This sparked a TikTok trend, where users post the title track alongside memories with their loved ones, with the monobloc chair taking center stage as a symbol of nostalgia.

From the backyard to the gallery

In 2024, it was included in the “New York Times” list of the 25 most significant pieces of furniture from the past 100 years that have shaped design.

It is featured in museums worldwide, including:

  • MoMA in New York
  • London Design Museum
  • German Historical Museum in Berlin
  • Copenhagen Art Museum

It is the best-selling piece of furniture in history, with over 1 billion units produced globally.

Who are you really, monobloc?

(fyiteam)

It is lightweight, durable, stackable, and easy to clean. There is no patent, so the original designer remains unknown.

Many credit Canadian D. Simpson with the design in 1946, while the first mass-produced (but not cheap) models include the Panton, Bofinger, and Selene chairs.

The Fauteuil 300 model was the first mass-produced plastic chair at an affordable price.

It is estimated that 240-250 million Fauteuil 300 chairs have been sold worldwide.

The secret to its success

(fyiteam)

To make it, liquid plastic is poured into molds and dries in just 50-55 seconds.

This makes it incredibly cheap (around €3) and fast to produce, making it a global best-seller in the chair market.

The exact number of manufacturers producing this chair today is unknown. No matter how many they are, however, they all recommend monobloc.

Let’s talk about aesthetics

(fyiteam)

Despite its practicality, it has been criticized for both its environmental impact and its aesthetic appeal.

However, manufacturers argue that nothing is wasted during its production and could be made from recycled plastic.

Basel, Switzerland, was the only city in the world to ban its use (2008-2017) in public spaces to preserve the beauty of the urban landscape.

“Wie snobistisch,” as they say in our village in the Swiss Alps.

Four legs, thousands of stories

(fyiteam)

Art historians consider it the most “democratic” piece of furniture ever made, as people of all social classes use it.

They argue that traditionally, chairs symbolize power and hierarchy (e.g., thrones), but the monobloc breaks this convention and takes on different meanings depending on its context.

This versatility is what made it popular across so many cultures.

Furniture Without Borders

(fyiteam)

It is perhaps the most widespread piece of furniture in the world, as almost every country on the planet either produces or imports monobloc chairs.

It is the quintessential example of a mass-consumed product found anywhere, from European gardens and African cafés to Asian restaurants.

The virality that united us

(fyiteam)

With people from all corners of the world sharing their stories and memories, what remains from the trend that brought the monobloc back into the spotlight is the realization of its global presence.

It is the most “omnipresent” chair in the world. And this is perhaps its greatest success.
