Stefanos Kasselakis, president of the Democratic Movement and former president of SYRIZA, is being referred to trial following a criminal charge for violating the law on asset declarations for Members of Parliament.

The case arises from the disclosure of documents revealing his company’s existence in the U.S., which provided funds to SYRIZA to pay employees.

According to media reports [1], [2] he stated that he was unaware of the legal prohibition on political leaders participating in foreign companies.

The trial of Stefanos Kasselakis is set for May 8, 2025.

In a post, he stated that “this case, which is not new, does not concern my asset declaration, which is fully transparent and fully declared,” and added that he was summoned on December 20, 2024, but the information was only made public now “completely coincidentally, along with the release and revelations of my book.”

A 2016 law passed by the SYRIZA government explicitly prohibits anyone from holding the position of President of a political party represented in Parliament while also owning or managing a foreign company.

Stefanos Kasselakis was president of SYRIZA from September 2023 to September 2024, when he was dismissed and later excluded from the party’s elections. In November, he founded the “Democratic Movement” party, of which he became president.
